Keep it real, do you still pirate movies, music and/or software? What’s your best loot?

I’ve been a 🏴‍☠️ since 10yrs old... built companies off of pirated Adobe creative software and a career...

Don’t really pirate much media unless it’s an inconvenience to watch a movie... software not as much but when I want to test an unlimited trial ;)

I have music subscriptions and streaming as well...

    How does anyone rationalize pirating?

    • Disagree, pirates are far more organized and efficient. This was especially true in the time of the normal movie release cycle where there was a gap between theater and release so there wasn't even an option. The market is catching up but not there yet.

      1) Can't afford it. - When I was a poor student in a developing country and everything was priced in USD even though replication cost = $0.
      2) Can't access it without paying for a bunch of bundled crap subscriptions - These days

  • Books mostly (libgen). Too lazy to pirate music, just Spotify.

If you are making 200k a year but can’t spent a few bucks for the content creators then I don’t know what to say.

Every time the rights over Disney are about to run out they do heavy lobbying and get them extended. It started at 30 years and it's currently at 120 and will get increased again soon. And of course the US bullies other countries onto adapting the laws to it too

Haven’t torrented or used Usenet in ages. In fact barely watch anything outside of Twitch and only use Spotify. For apps, outside of a code editor - everything done in the browser. My best loot was the Miles Davis or Mozart collection in FLAC. RIP whatcd. Back then when I was poor and had excess buffer, making bounties for obscure things was the best.

Used to pirate everything when I was younger and poorer, now it's 50/50.

I'll pirate PC games to check out how they run or if they're interesting because demos often either suck or don't exist nowadays. If I like what I see and I can get it at a good price (Steam sale, key site) I'll almost always buy eventually because it's easier to deal with.

I pay to see movies in theaters and have legit subscriptions to Netflix and Hulu but pirate whatever I can't find on there and run it off a Plex server because it's way more convenient than physical media.

I hardly ever pirate music now thanks to Spotify and YT for streaming and I collect vinyl but I'll still torrent if I know it's not streaming and/or I want digital and good quality (ie. stuff like King Crimson that's not on Spotify due to rights or obscure stuff that's impossible to find either streaming or on vinyl at a reasonable price)
