Part time PHD with full time job

I am currently a graduate student. I will graduate on May 2020. I on F1 visa. I got full time offer from Amazon. Mostly I will get H1B visa. In next 1-2 years. I am from India and it's very difficult to get Green card from H1B. Many people suggested me to do PhD in order to convert my visa status and eventually get Green card early, compared to H1B path. I am also interested in doing PHD because I like ML field and there are lots of possibilities for research. Is there any way possible to pursue PHD while working in Amazon? How long can it take to do PHD and getting green card? I don't have any clue about it and that's why I am posting this question here. Thanks #phd #h1b #greencard

You can’t do both at the same time. It’s not online master programs.

I know but one of my friends told me that some companies help you in pursuing PHD in the related fields.

Yes, you can do part time PhD. I know folks doing that.

Sounds fake

Not really. I didn’t know that part time PhDs existed either.

Looks like your friends didn't suggest you the full story. After PhD, it is not necessary that you get into EB1 for green card. You need to prove that you are an extraordinary research to get into that queue and trust me it's not that easy. Also, part time PhD never works. Throughout my PhD, I have seen many part time phds and they all dropped out in less than a year. Dm me if you need more info.

Some professors do take part time student. But those students are mostly work on side projects, because all the main research is done by full time students.

How are you going to find time to do research when you work for Amazon?

“Mostly I’ll get H1B in next 1-2 years” -> not true. Hope you know that there’s a lottery system and chances of getting selected is less than 30%. Just doing a Phd degree doesn’t qualify you for faster green card track (EB1). You need to meet other criteria (I think your work needs to be cited by other papers by ‘n’ times or something like that)

Yes I know about lottery system. Most of the people I know got their H1B in first 1-2 chances, also I am getting an extra chance because Amazon is filing for H1B in current year before my graduation. But your statistics are helpful. I didn't know about other criteria too. Thanks
