I recently graduated with a CS master's from a top university. Now I have this rare opportunity of doing a part-time PhD in AI/ML while working full time at a startup. The startup is doing enterprise AI. One of the founders is a professor at a middle-tiered university (rank 30~50 in CS) and is happy to take me as PhD student with current salary unchanged. Assuming I am capable of pulling this off, what would you advise in my current situation? YOE: < 1yr TC: 140k (excluding paper money) I'm still not decided on the career path after my PhD (academia or industry) and I'm open to both. But I do want to become an expert in AI (and get famous) in the future. #leetcode #google #facebook #startup #phd #research
I think this would be a great opportunity. I got into a top 10-15school fro a PhD not a top 5 and though i work at FAANG its always at the back of my head if I should have done a PhD. I know I dont want to be in academia but I still admire people who have a PhD especially in fields like Math/Physics and prefer working in teams that have these people as they are just more hardcore and fun. Do it it may be tough but its well worth it.
i have math phd, no one gives a shit. people 10 yrs younger than me promoted way before me and laught at me. rainbow and unicorn are nice, but they are only nice in heaven
Then you are not in teams that give a shit, at the end of the day your job perf matters more than your degree but there are certain jobs which appreciate Math phd kind of thinking. For eg DB team at Oracle which is still really good, DB team at MS they have a bunch of PhDs, Quant and even quant dev teams.
There is no way you are going to "become an expert in AI (and get famous)" doing a PhD part time!
Hey how did you end up asking your co founder for a part time PhD. Can I DM you?
