I have a really good idea for patenting but I don’t want to give it to Amazon via filling with them. I believe it will be a really
important feature in the future streaming world. I also don’t know how/where to start to build it. Any suggestions from who survived from startup ideas or entrepreneurship? Maybe I should file patent with my money first.

You need to quit your job to do that. All patents you file while employed at Amazon belong to Amazon.

The money is in either licensing, selling, or litigating the use of protected IP.

Unless you have investors that see a clear licensing or a litigious path to monetizing your protected idea - the patent could sit on the shelf. Or worse, be so niche that competitors find other entry points around your filing.

Easy to burn a ton of capital (and time) on something that’s never used or defeated by a technical workaround.

Also, don’t do research, design, or work on any company owned property (laptop, etc). Or consult anyone you work with...as it can be claimed as property by your employer.

The odds of a patent filed by an individual turning profitable is extremely low. Even if it has a great potential, others will find ways around your patent.

What if I file a patent under my brother name out side the US, Amazon can not still use it i think, isn't? plus it will be very very cheap if I file a patent in my home country :)

  • If you have ever even remotely worked on this idea– communicated about it, written notes about it, coded an MVP, or maybe, posted to TeamBlind about it– while on a device loaned by Amazon or primarily used for your work at Amazon, they already have a claim to the IP. If you believe you're a direct competitor, and you truly believe this is a worthwhile idea, you either need approval from Amazon legal, or quit your position and hope they don't hold you to a non-compete. Either way, from an investor's perspective, this is already an IP threat.
