Hi all. We have a baby on the way due mid 2020. SAP offers paternity leave which is great, however I'm thinking about applying elsewhere since I'm tired of the situation my team's been in for a while now and the work itself is pretty boring for me at the moment. However, one of my concerns is that I don't want to go on leave soon after joining a new job since I worry it'll look bad / set me back etc. so I wanted to get your thoughts and experience on it. Have you done it or seen someone else do it, and how did it turn out? Should I just suck it up at my current job until after I come back from leave and then make a move? Thanks in advance!
Take your paternity leave in SAP and then change when you come back. It's the best choice of two.
Not every company has a paternity leave. I'd play it safe to make sure you'll be able to help out with the baby.
Good call. As much as I dislike my job at the moment, it's probably for the best to just wait it out. Thanks everyone!
When I just joined FB I met a guy who needed to take paternity leave right after team match. I never saw him again
Lol
VMW allows this! I know of a few people who took paternity leave 1 or 2 months after joining
Also be sure to read the fine print. Some places want you to work there a year before you can take advantage of some of the more generous leave policies.
You can mention your coming paternity leave when interviewing. I wouldn’t have a problem with it
This is not a good idea. This information falls under what’s protected by FMLA. Do not bring it up in an interview setting. There are ways to find out about all benefits which would include this information.
Even companies that have leave usually require a minimum time of employment before you can take it (like six months)
Microsoft will let you take leave even if you hpin after the child is born. Or at least, they used to. Not sure they still do, but you can ask your recruiter. Other companies allow this, too. Keep that in mind. There shouldn't be any harm I starting leave a few months after joining.
Start applying for jobs now and see how it goes. The whole new job process can take 6 months or longer. Depending on the new company policy & length of employment, this could be something you negotiate once you have an offer. Worst case scenario, you take paternity leave from SAP then join the new company.
