I work as an engineer manager on a small company little less than 100 employees. I have 1.5 YOE in that company but I had my own startup business for like 4 years with a team of 4-5 engineers.

I was wondering what would be a good path to become a SEM at Apple?

1. get some more years as a managers and apply directly?
2. Apply as a software engineer and climb my way?

Apple managers are usually very technical and subject matter experts. You need to have a very specific speciality to impress a team. It’s not fluff.

Right, so I think thats not for me. Although I was an objective-c developer for like 7-8 years building my own apps, I don’t think I am better than anyone in any topic.

In a same boat but with a much bigger company. Does Apple of other FAANG companies hire EM from outside or they promote internally?

I have helped quite a few EMs transition to FAANG . They just have some basic qualifications like , you should have managed a team of 5-10 engineers and high technical bar . They usually will interview anyone ; interview cost is not that high ( 1 phone screen cost ) and they have ton of cache .DM me if you need more info

Yes but that is not hard to cover as the bar is not like super high. I think the bigger thing is culture and management skills .

I had my own startup for like 4 years with 4-5 developers. But I dont think recruiters count that as management experience unfortunately.
Right now I have 1.5 YOE

1 is easier. And you can apply for FAAMG em role instead of sticking to one company.
