Got offer for SDE2 position at PayPal with Base - 119k, RSU - 30k/3years. I have Masters and 2 years of experience. Any suggestions on counter offer numbers?
That seems amazingly low.... But hard to tell without knowing what the comparable levels are
Great offer . The RSU is for 3 years not 4 .. I would say just take it ...
That’s a standard for SE2. Try to negotiate on the RSUs. It’s very hard to grow once you are in. PayPal is not the best pay master. It’s probably 3rd or 4th tier company in Bay Area so don’t compare with FANG. I would suggest you to interview at some more companies and try to get at least another offer. That way there is some leverage. If you are in a hurry to jump ships, then that’s a standard for an SE2 and you can accept it. Check with the recruiter on our other benefits and bonus plan. They do have ESPP and 100% 401k matching. Bonus is 10% for your level. 50% is company based performance and the remaining 50% is your performance. The company’s component is paid in stocks and your part is paid out in cash. Try asking your recruiter how this works. Also, there is yearly RSU refresher. Hikes are crap. On an average people get 1-3%. So negotiate very hard on the stocks for which you need to have some counter offers.
But, i would suggest you to interview at FANG! Work at PayPal is not the best and culture is something that I don’t like! There are generally too many people and very little good work! You have to be political and sometimes good at dog fight! If you have time interview more at next tier companies!
Probably good by normal standards but super low by blind standards... should at least be 125k, rsu 100k+
Pretty good offer. That’s what I was offered for PayPal in 2011 with 8 years of experience.
This is a decent offer. Not great, but you're definitely not getting screwed to the wall. As others have pointed out, competing offers are key for leverage. I'm assuming the hiring manager will want to move quickly so you can make it clear that you won't move unless they offer you $60k in RSUs. Your risking a scenario where they'll pass you over for someone more "affordable" but that's the gamble if you want to maximize your potential earnings. Also, don't pay much attention to people from companies that haven't IPO'd being amazed at how "low" the offer is. They've got a distorted sense of reality because of the amount of paper money they've been offered. Good luck!
Thanks for positive words!
That is a good offer OP. Although definitely ask for bonus. I was in exact same position few years back with similar experience. Got 35k bonus and 125k base after negotiating. Rsus were same. Hope it helped. All the best!!
2 years US experience? Prior to Master's?
Yup, I have experience after Master’s in US.
Leave the salary aside for a second. Do you believe this position is what you want? Will that position challenge your skills? Is it a place you see yourself growing in the next 5 years? If one of the answers is No. Then the salary is not the question, and move on to the next place. If you believe in all the above. Ask a bit more and go for it. If you'll push too much, they will drop your position. That's what I was doing if I find someone too greedy...
Who stays at a job for five years in the bay?
I personally not located in the bay area, but I know many people from my company at the bay who are more than 5 years now...
You should have actual counter offers and your own goal for what you are worth. Blind posts aren’t going to help you.
