PayPal locks accounts and requires everyone to provide passport scan and utility bill? Wtf?
Any paypal engineer here? Why PayPal is doing this? The best way to annoy your customers is to lock them out and demand ransom. None of my banks or CC ever had or asked to have my passport scan and proof of address. They lock you out even from closing your own account.

PayPal always had this issue. This is one reason alternatives like liberty reserve and bitcoin really started taking off. In the black market it's hard to sell 150k botnet installs for PayPal... But bitcoin? Why not. And a lot of people give up, so PayPal gets to do whatever they want to the funds start few years

Its a “know your customer/customer id” regulation that we have to adhere to once your transactions hit a certain threshold. Its not a big deal. Also, Venmo will ask you for similar docs once you hit a certain threshold as well.
Paypal holds “instant transfer” everytime i did it for 3 days. Ridiculous

I tried to open a baked goods business on the side and PayPal freeeeeeeeaked ouuuuuut in a jealous and suspicious rage and has never been the same. Every month or two they still light up my email with "VERIFY YOUR ACCOUNT" aggressive messages so I just don't reply anymore. It's a shame because I used that account for about 15 years but I don't need that kind of controlling paranoid abuse in my life.

Who asked for it? I don’t see Paypal is asking for these details. Did it happen with anybody else?
Stop this hate against PayPal. Payments is a dirty business, and don't compare a bank with online payments. PayPal will be fined in millions if the transactions are not compliant. This is why our risk and compliance checks get triggered a lot. Fraudulent activities can come in thousands of different ways, as the tech and hackers advance. PayPal has to prevent money laundering, terrorist organisation payments and lots of other stuff. Opening a PayPal account is easier than opening a Bank account. They're both different. And PayPal is not same as Venmo. Until a few months back, venmo was just a peer to peer. You couldn't make a payment for a Service. I agree that we do have a lot of false positives, but the ratio is very low. And we can definitely improve on our customer service.
Time to decentralize PayPal. Invest in raiblocks!
