Why are we still tipping, this culture has roots in racism, it was primarily to not pay African Americans after ratification of 15th amendment .

We rented umbrella and beach chairs for 20$/hr , the guy casually turned the iPad for tips selections, why should I tip an umbrella setup guy , boba tea , ice cream guy , food pick up , Uber guy , airport pickup driver…

If the tip is what determines his wage let’s get into numbers, why should the tip be calculated based on % , the one time setup service fee should not depend on number of hours I spend under umbrella, 15% is 3$ , if he gets 3 customers per hour he can earn minimum wage, no special skills needed for able bodied person, push umbrella and 2 chairs for 20 feet, dig a hole, meanwhile Mexican workers are busting their backs with no medical insurance to pick the lettuce, cabbage for minimum wage .

If people are worried about servers not making minimum wage , Can someone come up with a system to see if the wage of the worker is met with all the tips + salary , if it’s met then stop tipping, are only servers are worthy of pity but not farmer workers, dish washers, cleaners , janitors , I don’t understand the logic .

Those are two mutually exclusive statements. One is a generalization applied to the entirety of businesses that allow/afford/encourage their employees to receive tips, the other is your opinion of the tipping economy.

Please be more crisp in your complaining.

That said, here are two scenarios regarding the beach umbrella guy:

    1. Don’t tip. He hands you an umbrella and chairs. Feel free to lug that with all of your belongings to a spot, set it up, eventually take it down, and lug it back to the rental stand.

    2. Tip. He carries the umbrella and chairs while you deal with kids and other belongings, finds a good spot for you where your belongings are unlikely to get wet, sets it all up, then possibly (if he’s at a resort) sends a waiter over to take a drink order. Then at the end of the day, he takes everything down for you.

The fee is for the good or service. The tip is to show appreciation to an individual who does something helpful.

If you don’t like the tipping economy, fine, write your politicians, encourage businesses to pay a living wage. But stiffing someone in the service industry on a tip does NOTHING to change the economy. It just makes you look like a dick.

We never question the companies that don’t pay enough to some of these category of workers. If we do that, we might not have to tip. But guess we might eat that as a cost passed on to consumer?

Everyone wants a damn tip these days. I hate those payment apps, they try to guilt trip you into tipping. And they always set the minimum at 22% for something like kayak rental where I have to carry it myself, or self served yogurt shops lmao.

I didn't pull that number out of my a$$. It's getting ridiculous out here. Started with 15% minimum, now they figured out they could earn more because no one wants to look like a cheapass clicking on Custom Tip, especially if there's a line behind you.

Tipping is optional. Don’t tip if you don’t want. I just always feel bad after that, but sometimes I just don’t tip. Especially in bars where they sell overpriced drinks
