I started working as a senior SWE at Facebook last year. Had to interview 4 times before getting the offer, so naturally I would say that I worked very hard for it. I joined FB primarily for the brand name (came from a no name startup and Infosys before that). Much to my surprise, when I tell people in SF that I work for FB I usually get a reaction of “oh” as opposed to “woah”. I’ve spoken to people here as to why, and they say that it’s just super common to find people who work at FAANG in SF. Is this the same in other major cities? I’m thinking of places like NYC, LA, etc. where there’s a sizable tech industry, but other major industries as well.
Try going to middle America if you want a “whoa” you work in “FANG”! Because people don’t give a F*** in SF.
You'll most likely get shit for working at Facebook in the Midwest because they're "cEnSoRiNg CoNsErVaTiVeS"
God I hate this industry
because they think u work in a Amazon warehouse?
No because there’s people like OP who thinks/cares working at a certain employer means something. It doesn’t just another cog in the machine. Same shit different place different manager. What people should really care about is an exit plan to get out of the rat race.
I think the general public’s perception of Facebook has declined over the years. The platform has become too sneaky and has lost trust at scale. I think that’s why most people are like “Meh” when they hear where you work. On the flip side, I think there’s a lot of pros to working at Facebook (and other FAANG). These are recognized companies that the general public has heard of. They’re somewhat of an exclusive group of employers that have a high hiring bar. And after working at a FAANG and delivering results, you can pretty much go anywhere.
People everywhere think I piss in water bottles when I say I work for Amazon.
LA = whoa. I remember when I was refinancing a few loans and the notary was like, “you work at FB!? I never met someone who work there before! Do you control the fake news?” Working class people outside of Bay Area are still surprised. Bay Area is so expensive now it’s almost a prerequisite to work at FAANG to live here.
So you still live through the eyes of others? Who should even care about FAANG, so pathetic.
Yes, people will be impressed outside the Bay Area and Seattle. I've gotten good reactions in DC and LA because Tech is not the only industry. But the real advice is to stop caring what strangers think about your job.
FAANG def adds to your resume but depends if you are looking only for Brand Name or Innovative Challenges coming with Startups. My 2 cent: Short term helps to be in FAANG, but long term there is a much bigger world , startup and work outside FANG. So if you dont move out of FAng at some point, your learning might stall.( surely u can avoid this by switching teams internally at FanG)
Stop being a fuck boy
Working at fb is not a big deal really. It’s just another company, especially in SF, where there are a lot of amazing non-faang opportunities. P.S I also work at a FAANG company.
