I have been working for less than a year at LinkedIn and have been put on performance improvement. I have previously worked at good start ups. This is my first big company. It had been less than a month since I joined and covid started so I didn’t get a chance to build a relationship with the team. My pull request stats (peer reviews and submissions) are lowest as compared to team. I got a mentor who was mostly MIA and had resigned around the same time I was put on PIP. The first time my manager put me on PIP in September, I was able to complete the tasks and stories assigned to me but it got extended to monitor my performance. Some high priority tasks came up in the second month and I couldn’t finish what was on my plate originally. (But was able to have the urgent project out and running in an extremely short notice) That rolled over now into November and I see I’m now just making mistakes out of anxiety and pressure of losing my job. I asked for a mentor again, I never got one. I know I would be able to do all this work in an environment outside LinkedIn, like I have done previously for other companies I have worked at. I don’t see an end to this PIP. In the last one on one with manager I was informed that the PIP is now till end of December My stats are improving, just not at an acceptable speed I guess? I’m second guessing every line of code I write, every slack I send. Is PIP normal tech culture? I’m facing it for the first time. I’m not sure what to do, work my bum off and save this job or look for another one? Any word of advice?
start interviewing again
look out for other opportunities
As a rule of thumb, start looking full time the moment you are put on PIP. Do not save the job, it's gone.
You got pipped in one month of working on the job? How is that possible?
I didn’t know there are companies that move faster than Amazon
In the 7th-8th month, not in one month
I thought LI had chill WLB. Are PR stats used to measure performance?
I thought so too about the WLB but I guess not Yes, PR stats - number of PRs made, number of PRs reviewed, the average number of hours PRs were open (which I think is kind of weird, the availability of reviewers is a factor)
That seems micromanagey. My manager says they dont look at that though I think could still be used against people. FB does use it for sure, idk about other companies.
Fuck 'em. Too many companies hiring out there to stress over one. Use the pip to your advantage. Think of it as a paid 1-month leetcode and interview time.
What team/org were you on? I want to know so I can consider avoiding.
Would like to know what team/org
