Pet moving

Oct 11, 2021 58 Comments

Relocating for a job. Need some advice on how to move the dog. She is 33lbs and driving is not an option. No airlines allowing her in the cabin as she is greater than 20lbs.

If I drive it is 36 hours so seems super tiresome. Hesitant about pet shippers and cargo, but will use it if that's the only other option. Any suggestions?
Have any of you used any shipping company?
Thanks in advance!

No more cargo in Delta airlines. Which else worked for you?

Seems like it might just be easiest to drive. It’s a one time thing and even if you hire some service your pet still has to endure a long drive.

As you drive just keep stopping every 2 hours for pee and poop, and when she’s sleeping drive more. It’s not complicated and it’s a one time thing

    • I see what you are saying. I have taken her once on a trip and when I stop for her to pee.. she would just go running in circles and not finish her business at all. So if that phase lasts for 4 or 5 days she will not be ok ...

Why not break the journey into manageable chunks and over 3-4 days? Hire a bigger car, stop over different places and make it into an adventure.

You also have the option to block the entire row on an airplane and have your pet travel with you. Specially if you declare the pet as an emotional support animal.

Finally you can also looked at the checked option. Speak to the vet about options to calm the pet down before the journey. Given it will be a max of 4-5 hours, that is also an option. My take is that moving is a stressful time for your pets so keeping them around you rather than using a shipping company where they are handled by someone else for extended period of time might be unsettling. Ultimately YMMV.

Do not fly her in cargo. That is not only stressful for dogs (or any other pet), they are often lost or they can die from depressurization or temperature drops. Just drive. 36 hours isn’t difficult. Take a nice route. Sightsee and make a couple of stops.

Agreed. There’s a reason that people who show their dogs never fly their dogs in baggage. The risk is too high. Some airlines don’t care to track down your dog if they lose it. I learned this when I used to compete with my dog on agility and I’ll never fly a dog in baggage.

    • Do you keep her on the front passenger seat or on the back ? She doesn't lie down at all when she is in the car. I am going to get her car seat/ extension

I keep mine in the back seat. You should also keep yours in the back since yours might be big enough arm the air bags and have them go off if you have an accident. This would be bad for your dog.
