How important it is for a data scientist to pursue a phD at the moment? Most open positions in FANG ask for it right? Thoughts?
I was a hiring manager at my previous job (computer vision startup). Phds are rare. Phds from decent schools in a quantitative field are extremely rare. I have one and I get interviews at every place I apply to. But you still gotta dehumanize yourself with leetcode.
Most non-fang companies I'd say you're fine without one. At FB and G, you either need one or you go for the lower decision support role data scientist (aka business analyst)
Pretty hard to. I've seen L3s with masters who worked their way up.
If it’s research role, u need a phd, if applied/data/machine learning scientist, u will be fine with a relevant master+ extensive work experience
Not needed. I'm happy to refer you btw
There are plenty of data scientists without phd
I think there are also two tracks at FB. How often do you see ppl without PhDs in the higher track? I think it’s called Core Data Scientist.
In Amazon you can be a janitor and be a research scientist in many groups. It's a shitty place. That said a handful of groups are an exception
As important as it is for a PM to go to Product school
