Hey folks, this is for a friend of mine. She did her master's in CS and is now looking for a PhD. She wants to do something in ML. Can she do it given her master's didn't have to do anything with it? What should be her approach?
If she still has no idea what to do with ML at this stage, she would better off not pursue a PhD, otherwise it’s likely to be a waste of time and opportunities
Don’t go for a PhD unless you know what and why you’re doing it and where you’ll be after it. If your friend already took the wrong Masters, my advice is to go to the industry for a year, study the landscape and make a real plan, starting from the objective. It doesn’t look like she knows what she is doing and status alone doesn’t really justify going for it. Ask her to compute the full cost of the PhD, and to consider what she won’t earn during the period.
Thanks folks. This is very helpful.
I'd recommend to spend a few years in the industry first, figure out what she really wants to do + get actual practical experience. Then do a phd
