Phd vs Industry

Apr 22, 2021 7 Comments

From a financial perspective, is it better to go straight to industry and get promoted fast or first go for a PhD in CS/ML/AI at a top 5 school? What salary can one expect as SWE after 5 years at FAANG? What about PhD new grads from top tier CS schools?

  • The average PhD new grad from a top tier CS school gets only slightly more than the average Bachelor's or Master's new grad. If your goal is only money, you should stay away from a PhD.

PhD is not worth it for chasing higher TC. Although, if you’re really passionated about research, I say go for it. You only live once after all. TC is not everything

IMHO PhD is not worth it because of how out-of-touch the mainstream university system operates in the US.

After 5 years of you are good and optimize for TC, in this market you should expect 400k as an L5.
