H1B golden era is over
I recently had a career refocus into AI and I'm loving it. I'm starting to look for PhD programs seriously. It was my intention before but I'd like to research novel ways to apply my theoretical interests to AI specifically. I also have an ongoing but small research and engineering startup that I'd like to grow in the next 3 or so years. I think the market will start maturing then and I don't want to miss the opportunity. I'm curious to hear from anyone who's attempted to found or join early stage startups while undertaking a PhD. I've considered doing a part time MSc with thesis instead, but I haven't found any serious masters programs in my space (categories and abstract algebra).
I was in a PhD program before I became an engineer. I was working 60-80 hour weeks easy for much of it and getting paid garbage. You're really treated like shit (at least I was) and a hostage to the whims of your advisor
In one word, don’t try both together. Choose one that’s more important to you and focus on that.
What if he can leverage his startup work towards PhD thesis/research?
How many employees do you have in your research and engineering startup?
Good enthusiasm, but you're setting yourself up for failure on one or both. Leading startups and PhD student life are both well >40 hr gigs if you want to go far. If you're just doing it for entertainment, then sure, go for both.
^^ This.
