I’ve been doing Wintel sysadmin for about 4 years, but I absolutely loathe the medical industry. Being that I’m in the St. Louis area, does anyone have any suggestions on how I could jump ship to, say, gaming?
If you want to work in gaming, then don't bother with the development side of things, it is a painful road, you will be much better off starting a twitch and a YouTube channel about gaming and streaming and you could make much more money and enjoy the work as well. It is of course risky but the rewards are also better
Don’t. Entertainment values IT even less than medical does.
Wow, that's incredible, or you don't know how condescending doctors and nurses can be :)
Then it’s incredible. ;)
Don't

I'm quite happy doing IT in gaming. There's not much near Stl though so you'll probably have to be open to relocation if you go for it. Gaming is way more fun though. Environments shift quickly so you play with more new tech but more expectation of automation and a more DevOps approach to IT.
Agreed. May not be true for all companies or teams, but this has been my experience.
Riot has an office in St Louis
Just start making games on the side. Every dog and their mother are doing it, why not you? :) I did that for a while but never had the stomach to go all the way.
Don't. Stay away. Avoid. Game companies care little for gamers and even less for people who are not directly making the games.
Horrible idea
If you insist, go to a major company who has an interest in gaming. Microsoft, Google, etc. Working for a company who's sole business is gaming as an entry level person is rough. Very rough.
