Please help me decide: Seattle or Texas

I recently accepted a L5 TPM offer from Amazon Seattle. The work sounds really interesting but I am not feeling excited when I read about Seattle weather, higher COL and all the stories about Amazon here. I am married with no kids. My wife is working and plan is to stay in her current job until she finds a good opportunity in Seattle. We both are on H1 and hold Canadian PR.

The positive things I can think about is Amazon brand name, option to move to India/Canada through internal move and what else 🤔 ?

I am worried about depressing weather in Seattle, almost double the house rent and COL, WLB may be bad and have to leave my spouse behind.

I know I shouldn't have accepted offer if I wasn't sure. I understand If I renege now, I may be burning the bridge but I don't want to regret on this decision if things don't work out. I would like to hear from blind community and if you guys can provide some suggestions?

I think you will get laid more in Texas than Seattle. Many hot latinas.

I’d say, take Texas! I moved to Seattle from Boston last year and regretted it. The freeze which people talk about is REAL and, homelessness is a huge fcking issue in Seattle.

That is true the Seattle freeze is very real. people are very strange around here and not as friendly as people in Texas.

Seattle freeze is not certainly true for some case if you are really outgoing person and he is married so he don’t need to hooked up. Watch Anthony Bourdain show about Seattle and people call it techie guys which don’t act like local or find techie girl.

@Vfua50 have you lived in a place like Texas? When I lived there I remember I moved to a new neighborhood and about 9 months later we had a baby. The neighbors that we hardly knew got together and brought us a prepared meal every night for an entire week. People generally are nice in Texas.

In Texas when you walk down the street people have a tendency to look at each other and at least acknowledge the other person's existence either with a smile or a head nod. The first week that I was here I did that to someone out in the suburbs and they just stared at me like a deer caught in headlights and after they passed the two guys that I attempted to acknowledge looked at each other and said "do you know who the hell that guy was?" There is even a guy from my neighborhood that I will see out and about in the community and he seems to go out of his way to not acknowledge or even make eye contact with his neighbors. This is not true with everybody. However I do feel that occurs more in the Seattle area.

Another example I have a habit of holding the door open for somebody else. It's just the way that I was raised. I did it for a woman at Amazon and the first thing she says to me after I let her in is "just so you know I'm married". My response was good for you. Really strange interaction. I mean what the heck I am not expecting anything from her I was just trying to be nice and it's just a habit that I have developed. I did have a woman friend here in the Seattle area that asked me not to do that for her. Of course I respected her wish but I found it very strange.

You answered itself . No need to judge one interviewer by door handling and all and my community have pretty much similarities where I stay. east side of Seattle which is suburbs. I don’t know you will find in Seattle downtown apartments community . You need yo head to suburban.30-40 min drive . I heard Redmond woodenville is nice too

Texas. Just made the move from Texas to Seattle a year back. Regretting it . Sure Seattle is a cool city. But love the quality of life you can get with lesser money, food etc in Texas .

I'm sure it is easy. I moved from another company to Amazon (Texas to Seattle)..and lived exactly where you work (in vicinity of CVS health ). So I definitely know the type of life , you'll miss if you move to Seattle..if you really want to be in Amazon, try applying to Austin roles?

Well. You can start looking for internal transfers to DFW/Austin when you feel youve learnt the Amazon tools etc (usually 3-4 months)

Does Amazon provide shuttle or buses to employees? If I live in Bellevue and want to commute to Amazon office in downtown?

No, she is working in Texas and will move once she gets a decent job in Seattle. That's the toughest part which makes me keep thinking about my decision 😒 but I feel positive knowing internal move in Amazon is possible (I know it may involve some luck and politics) just in case things don't work out.

You can try to refer your wife to a job internally at Amazon. My skip level manager did that with his wife. If you submitted referral and they hire the referral then you get $3,000. Like I said my skip level did it with his wife and his brother and walked away with $6,000.

Amazon Bellevue shuttle according to the app picks you up here
      3120-3180 139th Ave SE, Bellevue

Amazon commuter shuttle in Redmond picks you up from here
      9900 Willows Rd, Redmond

The benefits of the Amazon commuter shuttle over the Seattle metro buses are as follows
      1.) Cleaner
2.) Don't get any druggies riding with you on the Amazon bus
3.) Doesn't really stop at other stops. Metro buses take longer and will probably stop at other places.

If you are in Bellevue and live close to the Amazon Bellevue office there is an Amazon campus shuttle that goes between Amazon Bellevue and the Seattle office. That could also be an option for you. The Amazon Bellevue office you can find on Google maps. Search for Amazon Everest on Google maps. I have had coworkers go between Amazon Seattle and Amazon Bellevue by using the Amazon campus shuttle (different than the commuter shuttle).

Thanks so much! I appreciate all the tips and suggestions you provided 🙂 ! The app which you mentioned, is this something available to current employees only?
      May 27, 2019

App? Do you mean the Scoop app? There is also an app to schedule the commutter shuttle. I would not mess with those until after your first day.

By the way. Usually the commuter shuttle app says all the buses are full but even if you show up while on the wait list I have never had them turn me away.

Why don’t you try getting a role as a TPM in Amazon Dallas.
A quick search will show you some options

Also, working at amazon for a year or so will open a lot of doors for you. FAANG companies try to hire from one another

You can try applying on the job portal. Let’s see what the recruiter does.
You could also make the move and then apply for internal transfer. I’ve seen that happen

As long as there is an opening and you successfully go through internal interview loop, you can relocate

Based on compensation details of your current role in TX vs offer in Seattle, you’ll probably feel like you’re making a lot less money after moving to Seattle. It’s not just rent/mortgage; it’s also utilities, food, property tax (if you buy), vehicle registration, and general standard of living at your expected TC. E.g., if you go far enough north that you’re paying $500-$650K for a move-in ready single family home, your commute is going to be pretty cruddy.
    May 26, 2019 2
    • Yep, this! And even though there’s no state income tax, sales tax is high, food costs are high, entertainment costs are high, etc. For me, the commute is hell. I work from home two days a week, but at least with Amazon, you’ve got the company bus.
      May 26, 2019
    • Amazon :-)(-:
Property tax in TX is 2-3 times more than WA. Your monthly $ outflow for 500k house in Austin area is same as of 750k house in Seattle area. You pay similar amount for utilities. You pay similar amount for organic food and vegetables. On the flip side rent is lower in Austin area.

So Austin is not as cheap as you may think. It’s a little better but not a lot.
