Please help with remote work taxes

Feb 18 7 Comments

If I work remotely as a SWE for a CA or NY company but I live in another state in which there are no agreements between the two states where will I pay taxes?
Searches here say where you live, but I also found these links online which disagree

What is the correct answer?

In my experience, it’s where you live. It can be more complicated if you moved in the last year. You also need to take into account how your taxes have been withheld.

I live in VA - previously in UT - while working remotely for a WA company. When I lived in UT, I paid UT taxes; now that I'm in VA, I pay VA taxes.

What state is listed on your W2? If it is CA or NY, you have to file a tax return there and also in the state you reside in. You will receive a credit in CA/NY for taxes paid in your home state so it will zero out.

In a similar situation too. HR said they can’t give me remote status, so I’ll have to pay taxes until I move to my work location state. But they’ve told me that a tax advisor will be able to help me get a refund from my work location state till the time I’m working remotely

So all I can suggest is try to get them assign you a remote status. If they say no, your only option is to hire a tax advisor next year and get the refund
