Possible to do $300k+ for consulting?

Apr 6 15 Comments

On a work Visa, saw some deleted post claiming of making $500k+ in consulting?. My magic number is $350k and remote. Insurance can work out through spouse. Less than 40 hours and remote. I'll basically Keep doing this for next 8 to 10 years and FIRE. No dealing with company Kool aids, death march, ownership etc BS which sneaks into your life. Is that possible?

Consulting pays a lot less than FAANG because FAANG pays in RSUs, which companies give out like candy. Consulting is typically just cash.

Perhaps if you have a really rare skill set, you can command super high rates. But not your standard SDE.

    • Trying to see if there's a sweet spot. FAANG is capped too for ICs. Growth beyond senior is hard and depends on lot of things. I hate being attached to work and love it being as transactional as possible.

To answer the YoE question, I'm a bit unique in that regard. I've got about 9 years of professional experience, but I've also been on computers since I was 3 and I've been writing code since I was around 11, so I've got a lot of skills over a long period of time. My current "expertise" is full service application development, essentially. I can take your idea and make it into a workable piece of software with good polish, and I can deploy that software. I can also help maintain that software, and I can help build a team to maintain that software. Comfortable in on prem on cloud deployments, I can set up all the DevOps tooling you need, as well, and write up plans for executing DevOps strategies in an organization. Most of the time, though, the CI/CD is just for us because the customer usually doesn't maintain the software with their own team.

I also have a lot of skills on leadership and management, but I don't typically offer those as a separate consulting service because it's just not where I'm trying to compete. But good organizational skills and leadership skills are crucial to good project management, which I do offer.

Skillset requirements will largely come down to the client's requests, and it may be your job to know when to walk away, because your customer won't know where that line is. I've worked in Swift on iOS despite never having written a line of it in my life or owning an iPhone because the scope of the project was appropriate and I knew I could do what they were asking. I've turned down jobs in technologies I'm much more familiar with because those factors didn't line up. Be flexible, but know your limits.
