Political climate as a criteria for housing

Yesterday 21 Comments

This is just an informal post as I'm trying to understand people better.

For most of you, how important is the political stance of a city/ state before you choose to settle down there, buy a home etc?

I ask because I was having a conversation with a friend and they told me that they don't care much for it. That it isn't something that matters. I find it interesting.

For me it's extremely important - I couldn't move to a city where weed is illegal and transgender rights aren't priority for example.

Obviously there are no right or wrong motivations, if you guys can chime in and let me know how you feel/ think over such things that'll be cool.

How do you feel your choices are influenced by your early experiences like where you grew up, and your friends and profession? How have they evolved over the years? How much of them are money constrained, etc?

  • I would never move to TX no matter how dirt cheap the house is. I don’t even want to remember it is an actual state of US.

    • I lived in Austin and Houston and traveled a lot in northern Texas. For me, I don't want my kids to grow in an environment where abortion is illegal and religion plays an important role in policy making.

If it makes you feel better, it turns out the number of abortions hasn’t significantly decreased since the legislation was passed. It’s just making women who are on the fence make their choices sooner and they are making the same choice they would have.

Still obviously a bad policy but love to see their attempt to control women backfiring on these assholes.

I moved from a place with dumb conservatives to one with insane liberals.

I don't know anywhere in the US that is currently dominated by reasonable moderates. So pick your poison.

  • I wouldn’t move an anti-LGBTQ state.

I moved to California for a reason.

It’s very important to me. I absolutely cannot imagine living in a nanny state like California, Washington, or Oregon. They’re all beautiful states with terrible politics. The middle class is milked dry in blue states and the policies are typically not business friendly. Take the recent mass exodus of large, well-known organizations from California to Texas as a prime example. Liberal policies destroy families and businesses.
