I'm contemplating a move out of NYC to either Chicago or Portland. Anyone know what the job market is like in any one of the two cities for software developers? #portland #chicago #relocation #jobhunt
These two cities have vastly different paces, climates, and CoL. All 3 should be considered during your job search.
Iād love to know more about life in Portland if anyone had info to share.
Portland is super nice, safe and clean. The CoL is pretty low, but raising every year. Itās more of a large town, than a city. Great if you want to lead a life of being outdoors, chilling at home with friends etc... not great if you want a exciting city/ nightlife. The politics are extreme left and the weather is awful in winter and beautiful in summer. There is a growing tech scene there, but itās no Silicon Valley.
Clean? Someone hasnt been to downtown recently. Its overrun with homeless
Chicago. We have several great school districts and cheap real estate.
Those are vastly different cities. How did you arrive at those two in particular? Did you consider Minneapolis? Similar CoL and culture to Portland, but has more career opportunities.
Chicago was picked because there's family there and I love visiting the lake there. Portland for the mix of urban and nature and mild weather. But no have not considered Minneapolis. Will look into it, thanks
If you are outdoorsy, pick Portland. Hard to beat those dark green forests of PNW. Chicago or whole of Midwest is flat. I did not like it when we moved from Denver to Chicago.
Do you have a specific job lead in Portland? There isnāt too much tech there
No I do not. I am attracted to Portland more so for its vibes. I am worried I'll have a hard time finding a job there
Chicago! Portland is cool but in chicago ur closer to a lot of even more cool areas
Ha that sounds about right. Coming from the East Coast, I'm also looking for a change in pace. Wonder of Chicago will be as laid back as Portland
