For SWE role around 5 YOE at FAANG level companies in the Bay Area so the companies in the bucket could be Uber, Airbnb, Twitter etc. I know hitting $250k+ TC non-remote is probably easy, but if you started at the bay area as non-remote employee and transition into fully remote after couple years, how does the compensation change? Or does it change? Thinking about switching my current remote friendly position for a higher pay but would be reluctant to change if the on-site pay can't eventually translate into a remote pay.
I'm just shy of 200K TC, fully remote. I certainly think 250K is possible where I'm at. I started in Seattle with a team that desperately needed my skills. Initially they shut me down when I first came to the decision to go remote, but I forced their hand and got an external offer for leverage. Slowly built up my experience in that team as a remote engineer and started looking for better roles. Pay didn't change at all, but that will be dependent on company policies. For me, the pay band for my remote location happened to be the same for in Seattle (despite being 10x cheaper). So I'm not limited in that regard.
That's awesome to hear! How long would you say it took them to be comfortable with the idea of you working fully remote? Also how has it been working for Amazon fully remote?
I got an offer from amazon, told them I would really like to accept, but wasn’t ready to move to Seattle. They offered a remote option. Guessing this largely depends on your hiring manager
That makes sense. Did you end up accepting the offer to work remotely? How has it been so far?
I did not. I was ready to move, but was just making an excuse to decline so I could leave the door open just in case. Ultimately decided to decline due to the culture and lack of benefits compared to my offer from google.
