Hey Blindfam,

We are expecting a baby in July and at 24 week ultrasound, the doctor indicated that the placenta is 7.4 cm thick (in case you are wondering, generally it is equal to week*mm, should have been ~2.4cm). The doctors have referred us to the maternal Fetal Medicine, but the appointment we’ve got is after a month. The doctors seem quite relaxed about it, unless the MFM classifies this as high risk pregnancy. Till now, the baby growth seems normal, we have already taken the chromosomal abnormalities test which came clean. TORCH blood test result should come in a day or two but is also highly unlikely.

I am trying to see if any of you experienced this during your pregnancies, and anything we should lookout for or ask doctors to take care of. Thanks!

Of course there are bad doctors and good doctors: they’re human.

“Our Gyno claimed that she has never heard of the issue our child had.” Would you prefer they lie to you?

    • This person above is mind blowingly insane - not sure if they have actually gone through pregnancy before. EVEN if child is born with special needs have you actually talked to such parents before blabbering that it destroys “3 peoples life”?

OP - if they classify as and send you to high risk pregnancy specialist it’s not a bad thing. That will enable to do certain tests more frequently, there are lot of genetic tests that will also be possible. I do not think what you described is necessarily an issue.

During pregnancy we found nuchal fold thickness and doctor had small concern about Down syndrome as this could indicate genetic deficiency. High risk pregnancy center helped with all the care and testing and ultimately were found to have no issue with it.

Ask doctor will it increases the chances for IUGR baby (Intra Uterine Growth Restricted - babies growth inside the placenta is restricted because of not enough space to grow aftet certain months and baby may get less nutrients after that. And this can be prevented if doctors can dete t or suspect it early by week 25. But after baby is delivered their growth will be normal but start with lower numbers on the growth chart. In these cases doctors usually prefer for early delivery as they weigh the optionsof keeping the baby in the mothers woumb vs outside. Usually mothers woumb is the best place but for any placenta issues they will monotor the mother and baby closely. ) ? And how can it be prevented? Don't hesitate to ask doctors any questions you have. Stanford or UCSF has the best gynecologist dept.
