"The head of Amazon's cloud computing division on Monday said the company would work with any government agency that followed the law, in contrast with rival Microsoft Corp, which has touted its rejection of controversial sales." https://finance.yahoo.com/news/1-amazon-embraces-u-government-044921654.html
Who decides what is controversial?
🇺🇸Uncle Sam 🇺🇸
“... would work with any government agency that followed the law” what’s wrong with that?
Chinese law.... or Saudi Arabian law? Just whatever any country says is law?
Foreign governments would definitely be a different issue since there is not a standard for human rights globally. But context matters and the context here is US government agencies so I see no problem selling services to the US government that are following the laws made by the lawmakers “we the people” voted into office. If we don’t agree with the laws, we need to vote different lawmakers into office to make changes.
I think all this is just eyewash. I don't see why companies play with ethics the way it suits them. Company has a fiduciary responsibility towards it's shareholders to maximize it's income and I feel happy Amazon is doing just that.
The company has a responsibility to their shareholders. But the people running the company have a responsibility to behave ethically unless they want to be considered unethical people. That’s why they turn down controversial business opportunities.
You do realize we're talking about Amazon, right?
