Hi, I have been recently interviewing with many companies some of which are still private (airbnb, uber, quora, etc). I have been at FB for two years, joined as a fresh grad, got promoted to E4 in two halves and expected to be E5 soon if I keep the same track but I’m interviewing to see whats out there for me. For public companies, its easy to tell how much the stock Im given is worth and its easy to sell when I vest, but for private companies though, Im not sure what I should be negotiating. I know crunchbase has some numbers but Im not sure how to read into this data or what to look for (I’d expect private companies to offer more $$ in stocks than public one because I suppose selling the shares is not straightforward. Also, is it common to negotiate one level up? I don’t mind having a system design interview and if I stay at FB for one more year I will most likely be E5 anyways TC 205k YOE 2 years but had few internships during college and side projects
always easy to negotiate if you have competing offers... Also, join Uber. They’re ready to IPO next year at a valuation of FREAKING 120B. (not sure how they managed that though lol).
I'm in a similar boat, promoted to E4 in first half. I haven't looked at too many private companies, but it depends. Smaller ones you should be able to get senior if you're decent, but larger places like Uber and Airbnb definitely won't at first, and I'm not sure how much they do post interview leveling.
