Hey, I’m working in the early stage startup(7 core people) as product designer. Company funded by venture from SF, but it’s fully remotly and Founder/CEO based in other small US city. Company don’t make any money yet. I don’t have equity. After a few rounds of negotiation i get $120k instead $80k TC. It’s good money for country where I leave, but designers with similar experienece get $250-350k in SF I working in the comapny for a 6 months. I have 7 years experience and take wide responsibilty: - Help shape the product strategy and vision - Prepare product design specifications and create design sketches and drawings. - Assist in product development and implementation activities. - Persuade CEO and dev team to create design system in Figma and code upfront to avoid mass in the code and millions hours of refactoring. I‘ve initiated and lead this process. - Making different ux testing, user interviews Please check poll and share your thoughts I. comments. If you’re remote designer or engineer with 5-7 years experience I would love to hear your TC #salary #compensation #tc #remote
The reason for high TC is because of higher cost of living. Remote teams *generally* help businesses pay by the region. How does your TC compare to other designers locally?
And what if I traveling and changing my location every 3 months. I should change rates every time I get the plane? 🤨
Do you want them to pay you more cuz you like working from Bali? 😆. All I’m saying is that it’s a good salary if you’re in a low COL country. If you moved to SF, I’m sure they’d double the salary. In the nutshell, you’re not underpaid.
If you think you stack up to the designers in SF making $300k and you want to make $300k, you are probably going to have to move to SF. Does it make sense or is it fair to pay you a different amount because of where you live? Depends on who you ask. But those questions don't really matter, it's about what you can get. Most companies pay less for remote workers because they can. And they pay less for remote workers outside of SF because they can. And they pay less for remote workers outside of the US because they can. At the end of the day, you have a few options: * Decide you like the arrangement with your work * Decide to try to get a raise at your work * Try to find a company hiring designers at $300k who doesn't do nation-based market adjustment or cost of living adjustments. I'm doubtful this exists. * Move to the US or SF to increase your salary. This may also take away the option to work remotely. * Start consulting. This gives you the option to try to make a salary based on what your work is worth rather than where you live. So take stock of what's most important to you and what options are available to you.
