    • @OP A product owner is an agile term, you can be a product owner and a product manager. A lot of companies use it wrong.

I took a much bigger pay cut to move from senior level engineer to entry level product manager. But due to my experience, I’ve moved up quickly and am already essentially where I was before 18 months later. (I’m adding the annual bonus and benefits/PTO in that, was contractor before)

always a balance is good, think your motivation and interest level to get into product and excel is very good, it’s going to take you far in the pm role. but sacrificing too long of a hour can lead to burning out as well, always a balance is good and ideal

This is low, especially for NYC. Have you looked externally?

I think you should give it a shot! There are startups at various stages - look for the ones with solid funding, good leadership, and have been around for a few years. They will still give you great experience and mitigate risks.

yeah whatever you can do to get your foot into the door whether that’s an internal transfer or a startup that may be easier to get into the role, you can get few years of experience and then transfer to a diff company with higher pay

  • 80k with three years of experience does seem low. However, I don’t think that money should always be a driving factor in your decision especially if there is future growth potential.

Exactly, you can compromise the cut if you’re pivoting into product. There is money here if you wanna swallow 1-2 years of work to jump into the field.

it’s actually pretty common for folks that want to pivot and go to a new set of career or field. don’t get discouraged that salary is low because as long as it’s something you’re interested and passionate about pursuing long term, then it’s worth it

If you don’t live in Manhattan 80k is doable. A lot of people I know live in the out boroughs making 50-80k
