I'm currently a sr director level product manager at a unicorn startup. TC is 240 in a relatively inexpensive market, and we have a nice house and good standard of living (options which are not liquid and who knows what the value really is). Wanting to move to Seattle and trying to figure out where to go. Currently, I am part of the leadership team and have a lot of autonomy and breadth in my role, which I feel would be down leveled significantly if I go to a big tech co. But I also have a growing family, Seattle is expensive, and comp is a big consideration. Are there any mid-sized companies that compare on comp? If not, where is the best place in Seattle to do product, esp if my 5 year goal is to try to become executive level? Which companies have the best flexibility (ability to WFH, flexible hours)? I should also mention I have a non-technical background - I am more of a strategy/planning oriented PM. I have recruiters from just about every tech company in my inbox, but need to figure out what to target.
Can confidently say that you will not get executive in 5 yrs at Amazon. You will be lucky to get director in that time.
Agreed. Question is whether I could exit Amazon in 2-5 years and go in as an exec at a smaller company.

Scope will be significantly smaller at large companies and you will spend more time dealing with petty politics than real work. Unless, your TC goes 50% higher don’t do it
TC would be 100% higher, plus where I work now is shockingly rampant with politics too.
