Hello World, I’ve received two offers to join a technical role in security. One role is Product Security Engineer & incident response @ IBM. The other role is Cloud Security Automation Engineer (basically automating governance in the cloud) @ Ciena. I’d love to build a career in Cyber security, and by accepting either of these offers it would be my first ever professional experience in Security. I understand that the nature of the roles would be different, but what I’m looking to get a better understanding of is which path would lead me to a better future in Security. The reason I’d like to join IBM security is because: - It’s a massive brand name in this space - I’d be working on very important problems - Compensation is good (Base salary: 125-130K + annual bonus + discounted stocks + solid benefits) - Will receive training to participate in red team activities The reason I’d like to join Ciena is because: - It’s a role in Cloud Security. Everyone is moving to the cloud and so cloud security seems to be a very hot career - Team culture is amazing. IBM culture is good too don’t get me wrong, but this culture seems waaaay better - base salary 110K + 5K signing bonus + discounted stocks + really good benefits (IBM had better benefits for sure with the exception of life insurance - they will work on matching IBM’s offer - this role leverages a TONNE of my current experience which is in automation If I look at this only from a compensation perspective, IBM is the winner in my eyes. However, if I’m looking for a more lucrative career in Security, which company should I go for? Does brand name matter in a career like this? Does having some form of red team experience make me more valuable in the future (one can always learn offensive security on their own). What are your thoughts? Please ask clarifying questions if I’m missing something you need to know. Thanks in advance! #security #securityengineer #cybersecurity
Go for cloud. You want to be writing code not incident reports.
If you want to learn more on security which u want to get into eventually then for IBM. In the other company u might just end up automating by writing code and not actually deep dive into security. Choose ur strength if u think u want bit of coding and bit of security then the Ciena . If you want to do Security and the related processes even if its manual go to IBM.
Go with cloud automation role
I work in cloud security, lots of Python & Cloud Formation scripts. Go with IBM. Better brand name, TC, and product security + incident response will make you dive deep into security. Learn offensive security on the side, it will make you better at incident response and improve your defensive mindset.
Dm me
For someone who has been in security for quite long and have worked in both domains , I would strongly suggest to join in cloud security. The domain of cloud security is at absolute high rising shape and it is going to go 10x in next few years. Ping in few years when you are there.
A little late here but IT is AWESOME at Ciena.

My vote goes to IBM’s role. It seems more of a hardcore security role that will get you to learn quickly and build that experience in cybersecurity. The 2nd role sounds kinda Cloudy/DevOpsy, which is great but as I understand you wanna get into the field of cybersecurity. IBM sounds better that way. Also doing Incident Response is great. I’ve been in this field and it taught me a lot. Lastly, depending on the role, a cybersecurity role can involve coding/automation as well. If IBM’a role has that element, then that’s even much better.
