I am curious to know what the program manager role at Microsoft really entails? I am looking for the next move in my career, currently a product owner with 2 years of experience. Is coding part of the expected job responsibilities?l
PgM of what?
Do you mean which department/domain? I just the generic title through careers site
Yes, because that title is agnostic of group Responsibilities will vary if this is Ops, Compliance, a SW Product or even a HW product The question needs to be more specific to get a real answer
Program Manager is a catch-all title at Microsoft.
Yep. You could be a facilities staff and be designated as a PM. And I guess the janitors also do a lot more work as PMs than the rest of the IT crowd combined
💯 % agree with MooLan
Microsoft hiring/interview process depends on the team. It’ll change slightly if not completely based on the team that will be interviewing you. If you are interviewing for fairly technical team then expect writing a pseudo code. Senior PMs on my team do code reviews (sometimes). Knowing how to code is extremely important because you’ll be working with engineers and it’s vital for your job to understand what they are trying to accomplish. PMs on our team write github repos for customer, samples for documentation and since it’s public facing you have to be absolutely sure they work and won’t break if new releases are made. So I’d say you should know how to code If you are not comfortable with technical space msft has business pms.
What are the pre reqs for this role?
Hmm
Honestly, based on the last 2 Microsoft PMs I knew, you just need to be able to sound like you know everything and good at playing politics. IRL, you don't need to know shit.
Well count me in then
Tons of PMs at MSFT are garbage. The good ones are generally closely aligned to features and engineering.
!
It's the usual PM role everywhere else. People who couldn't make it as an SDE, so they parade around pretending to understand all the buzzwords. The flipside is, most executives likely started off in a role like this. So if you persist long enough, then you too can order around SDEs one day.
Your resume and LP is enough!

Lack of diversity in engineering division at X
Pretty much just powerpoints and emails/meetings all day. No coding although there might be some in the interview
Okay that does provide some insight! For the interview, should I expect proper coding on databases, data structures etc. or can it be more likely towards pseudo code?
Ignore him. He’s probably a bitter Dev. The PM position varies widely in Microsoft. Do you know the team? That might help answer more directly. And coding is very unlikely.
