I have noticed that Amazon at senior levels (say L8) prefers to hire from outside rather than promote from within. I heard from colleagues at Google that their philosophy is the opposite: do not hire senior talent, rather rely on promotion. Anyone at Amazon or Google have an opinion on this? What about other companies?
It used to be like that, but not anymore. Or at least in GCP, we are giving away L6, L7 like candies. I have seen few external directors, but their quality seems be OK though.
