I am going to join Amazon Seattle as a SDE 1 (university graduate). I have done my internship in Amazon last year. I was doing my masters which I just completed. I have prior experience of about 3 years in India before coming to US in good software companies. Is there anyway after joining Amazon I can expedite my promotion to SDE 2 in less than 1 year? Is it even possible in Amazon? If yes, what is the best way to go about it? Should I directly talk to my team manager about my aim? Or should I work for few months and then approach the manager with this thing? Any suggestions that you can give would be really helpful.
It is possible, but hard. You are on the right track by asking for promotion and goals. The SDE2 promotion docs are public inside Amazon. I suggest you read them and understand them before talking to your manager.
It’s a real stretch. I have seen it twice on my old team which really held to the bar and in both cases they were fixing a mis-leveling at hire where the engineer had 5+ years of industry experience. I would set your sights on 2 years and understand that 2 is still pretty quick. Alas, it has not been my experience that sde experience in India translates very well. You may be the exception.
Thanks for your answer. What’s the average time for promotion from SDE 1 to SDE 2?
It used to be 3ish years. Now it is closer to 2 and, frankly, I think that is due to the bar being lowered. That’s not your fault so shoot for two be thrilled with 1.5 and maybe be ok with 3. Learn your craft and your career will be awesome. Rush ahead and you will hit some real headwinds.

Actually I did my internship there, so I have pretty good idea about the team and work. So , I asked for some suggestions.
Oh well if you've got 3 months under your belt let's skip right to SDE 3.
