Is this really how promotions work at Google and Uber? https://mtlynch.io/why-i-quit-google/ Uber copied Google's promotion process, so I assume it's similar at Uber. All the engineers must be practicing promotion-oriented programming lol.
Sounds about right. Tbh i like Google's promo driven development. It aligns engineer's goals with org goals. If something ain't giving you promo, that project is not worth to Google, the company, and you should find something else to work on.
How easy is it to change teams?
It's easy (unless you are underperformer) but it kinda resets your trajectory and pushes promo at least half a year farther.
People at Google talk a lot more openly about promos and what you need to do to get them than at other places I’ve worked, which is great. Like most of Google’s bureaucratic processes it’s probably a bit too formulaic but in the end we all know that it’s just a job and that everyone should do what they need to do in order to succeed.
This is all factually accurate, and the concern that promo doesn't incentivize the right things is widespread at Google. However I think a majority of employees believe our promo process is fairer than at other companies.
