Starting as a product manager @ FB this month.
Honestly, I am quite nervous that I will not meet expectations. Heard that the company culture is very competitive.

Would appreciate tips for being successful as a PM at FB as well as for the first few months.

Thanks in advance!

To what extent the manager is usually involved? From your post it looks like they are quite distanced from what their teams address doing. Why is that? How do they get the results they need?

I'll tell you what my manager once told me: it's just a job.

  • In a place like FB where engineers reign supreme you’re going to need to focus on soft skills and figure out how to influence to drive your agenda. Obviously your agenda also has to make real commercial impact so having a good idea for revenue/engagement is going to be key.

  • Hey there, the advice you’re getting is not super helpful and people don’t seem to know what they’re talking about.

PM at FB is hard, but that’s natural when you’re working on hard and interesting problems. The company does a lot to support you, and most people are kinds and helpful. Every part of the company is different with a different mini culture, but in general, you’ll find other PMs and your partners helpful and smart. If you were hired, you meet the bar, so don’t worry before it’s necessary.

Once inside, there’s a wiki with dozens and dozens of helpful PM skills related posts. It’s super useful and worth reading an article a week.

Good luck. Worry less. Have fun. You’re going to grow a lot, and in many ways, FB will be the best you’ll ever have it as a PM.
