Push for a Law to Protect Employees from Layoffs

At least the California law should force companies to provide laid off employees at least six months salary or 4 month notice for someone who is on legal immigration. This will protect employees otherwise we get penalized for leadership mistakes. They need to think before they hire/layoff someone. Amending after 67 votes: The employer should provide the option to new hires to fund 50% to their layoff package from their salaries. This would be win-win. Its like emergency fund. Its up to the employee to opt for this. if they do they will be protected otherwise not! If the employee resigns they should get all money back whatever they contributed.

Will folks on visa be willing to provide 6 months notice for voluntarily terminating their employment with the company?

Amazon loeqpr Sep 10, 2019

This is fair.

Nonsensical post! It's an employment at will. You can leave at anytime, and they can fire you anytime. Will you agree to a law which says that if an employee doesn't produce X amount of work, then the employee has to reimburse the company for loss?

You never got laid off so for you everything is nonsensical

eBay mDBW53 Sep 10, 2019

I’ve been laid off and this post is nonsensical.

Homeaway atxhx Sep 10, 2019

How would this be fair to legal citizens?

GE eifa03 OP Sep 10, 2019

6 months salary

Homeaway atxhx Sep 10, 2019

Oh I misunderstood. Agreed.

Veritas thetruthin Sep 10, 2019

Not sure, if you pass a law like that companies will stop hiring internationals as they would become a financial liability. I mean, Trump would probably love that

GE eifa03 OP Sep 10, 2019

4 months notice is not a big deal, come on! Also, 6 months pay, is not that huge as majority of the companies give severance already. Stream lining this will be win-win even for the companies as they only hire on strict need basis instead of reckless unnecessary hiring

I like the spirit of it but I think it would disproportionately affect immigrant workers and reduce their opportunities if they're the only ones who need notice which I'm assuming is your intention If you apply it to all workers it would likely slow hiring in general and I think the drawbacks would outweigh the benefits. It sucks getting penalized for bad leadership but that's a universal part of life I think harder to fire = less likely to hire

This is what happened to Spain and France. I’m pretty liberal but OP’s concept of “worker protection” is terrible for everyone.

GE eifa03 OP Sep 10, 2019

Okay, let me amend the law. The employer should provide the option to new hires to fund 50% to their layoff package from their salaries. This would be win-win. If employee opts they will be protected

GE eifa03 OP Sep 10, 2019

California has majority of immigrants they need more time to find another job!!! Insurance doesn’t help
