I got an offer for a position in PwC as a Transfer Pricing Associate in the Cleveland office. This is def not my ideal role, I want to be able to move within a year to consulting with a concentration in Finance or strategy. Is it a good strategy to get your foot in the door and then look for opportunities to move? or is it better to apply to the position that I really want and hope for the best?
General attitude is that internal transfers are not easy. I have not tried myself, but seen a few people try and end up stonewalled by their departments. There are also no referral incentives for internal roles.
Internal transfers are difficult if you are a high performer. The attrition rate is high and no manager wants to let go off their good resource. So they usually reject internal transfer requests.
I’ve seen lot of people move internally especially on west coast either to different markets or different groups. I would say take it and get your foot in the door. But be prepared to network within the firm and build relationships with the group you are most interested in.
Fishbowl will have better answers. More consultants there
