What do you guys think of working for a series a startup, the founders are extremely qualified and I’m interviewing as their first marketing analyst. I’m on visa and want to make some money ASAP. Thoughts / suggestions

  • Quick story, I was hired at one such startup and persuaded that I was exactly who they were looking for, that I had the exact skillset and expertise they absolutely needed to make them succeed. I only learned a few months later that I was just a placeholder so that they could convince investors that everything is progressing according to plan. Meanwhile, the guy that the really wanted was finishing up a contract in Australia that was still going to be in effect for three more months. As soon as those three months were over, he repatriated back to the United States, took a role a couple levels above me, and from that day on I was locked out of every meeting until I was fired just two weeks later. Only afterward did former co-workers tell me that's what they believed the company had in mind all along when they first hired me. That's the world you step into when you work for a small startup.

  • You can find good companies (proof right next to my username 😝) but it’s hard. Do your research. Make sure you’re willing to bet on the founder(s) and make sure the company has a huge opportunity/market.

  • OP, I joined my current company after doing basic research on the co founders...they sold last 3 companies....

I would suggest, dont go with 1st time founders specially if the company is only series A....its new game for them as well and they just cannot come up with the right culture and thought process

  • When joining startups with eventual stock appreciation in mind, you should consider the realistic scope of this company. If you’re given 1% of a company that eventually sells for 100M after a few rounds, you’d end up making 500k (after accounting for dilution). You could easily make more at a big company like google with minimal risk.

  • Considering you are a marketing analyst and you are on H1B Visa, I am sure it would be hard for any excellent lawyer to prove you a STEM highly skilled worker in this environment specifically for a series A startup

If you are H1B, do consider this..
