Have an offer from FB as an IC PM. Also interviewing with Amazon for L7 Sr Manager role managing a team. Initial comp aside, what are the pros and cons of these two companies? Specifically...
1) Which one is faster in terms of getting promoted/growing career?
2) Which one ends up with better TC over time (refreshers, raises)?
3) WLB? I hear it's pretty tough with both companies.
4) Obviously FB has better food/perks etc. Other pros and cons?

  • I've been in both. Take L7 at Amazon. The scope is much better.

hsh682, are you kidding or guessing or have you worked at Google and know the scope? L6 at Google technically leads 20+ people minimum , L7 Googler has even a bigger scope. L7 manager in my org manage 30+ size teams many even manage almost 50 people org. At L5 I was leading 20+ btw.

    • I never worked at Google as I turned their offer down. I personally know many L6 and L7 managers in both Google and Amazon. L6 are usually the same - front line managers who manage teams of up to 10 people. I know that Google specifically try to reduce the maximum number of reports per manager to up to 10. It's not rare to find managers with 15+ reports at Amazon (not saying it's a good thing).
For L7 the scope is a huge difference not just the number of people even though I know few L7s in Amazon who manage close to 100 people. L7s in Amazon manage a very large product (think of AWS elastic beanstalk as example) while in Google it's usually just managers of managers and it comes with natural growth. I'm not coming to bash any company I'm just saying if you're looking for scope I will highly recommend Amazon over Google.

Sr Manager of Product Management at Amazon is a super legit role. Massive scope with product leadership ownership of 200+ person org. L6 AND L7 Principal PMTs Will report to you. You will learn to talk in mental models instead of features/projects.

You cannot get that scope as L6 IC at FB. Been there done that.

Don’t think short term, think of what sets you up for your growth longer term. An L7 Sr Manager of PMT went to a multi billion dollar company as a VP.

    • I don't think what you are saying is right. I've seen clowns be L7s and especially in bloated areas. I would want to be a director at Amazon to make it fair

You would want to be a Director directly managing a 200 person engineering org, plus a product and program org, and own P&L - to make it a fair comparison with FB L6 PM IC?
