QAE vs SDET at Amazon

What is the difference in QAE & SDET roles in Amazon? Please suggest what needs to be learnt or be prepared w.r.t technologies, tools, culture before the joining day at Amazon in regards to both the roles.

One for manual testing and the other for scripts and test framework, I guess

QAE doesn’t code at all?

Wrong. Please check my comment on the thread.

It depends on the team. Need to know how to execute some scripts

QEAs write automated tests, add some enhancements to the test frameworks, create or improve QA processes, test plans, and test strategies. And manual test execution. Maintain automated tests. SDETs create test frameworks and infrastructure (like hosting test tools and services) that QAEs and SDEs can use to write automated tests, create or improve test processes. In some teams, SDETs also write automated tests and maintain tests, but usually don't see this in most of the teams.

Thanks for input. Also could you please let us know the technologies, tools that one need to be aware of in-order to be easily ramp up in Amazon both for QAE and SDET.

That purely depends on the team. Some teams use python, some use Java for coding their tests. Also depends if you are going to be on the teams owning backend services, or front end. For backend, you would write tests hitting the services directly using the APIs. For front end, you'd use UI automation frameworks like selenium, appoum, uiautomator, etc.

In addition to the above comments, it also depends on the title naming convention of a company...
