I have an upcoming on site for a Google L7 Sr Manager position. When I initially accepted the interview, the format was described as expected (system design + behavioral).

I am currently an L7 at Amazon so this didn’t concern me.

A week later the recruiter tells me the HM would like to see some coding. To be honest this sounds good (to be able to be more hands on) but I haven’t written production code in a decade and I’m not going to LeetCode myself into madness at my age.

Is this normal? Can’t tell if it would be an awesome opportunity or I should run for the hills.

YOE: 20 TC: $585k

Update 1: Thanks all for the feedback and support. I’ll report back on what they ask.

    Update on my end.

L7 loop happened. No coding (2 system).

Seems like the feedback was positive though maybe not enough for L7.

However, original HM lost the role they were hiring for so now I’m being matched.

    The waiting continues.

Maybe not write actually working code that passes test cases but more or less demonstrate that you can come up with solutions and discuss trade offs etc. Honestly I wouldn’t worry too much about it

Normal. Google expects even VPs to solve LC hard optimally

Lol I’m exaggerating, but it is true that Google is known for having technical management

HM want to see your problem solving skills nothing to worry about. I think you will ace it op considering your experience and level.
    Good Luck!

I’ve seen others on Blind say that L7 EM at G don’t have coding in their interview loop. Is this the first technical screen? If they’re asking you to do coding for virtual on-site loop, then they may be considering you for L6 instead of L7

Thought the same thing so double confirmed the level. Now, it’s possible they want to get ahead of a potential down level scenario.
