Meta E6 interview request

Apr 2 48 Comments

So I am senior engineer at Microsoft

I was in call requesting for E6 interview at Meta but the sourcer was asking my current level and told me that it maps to only E5 at meta

I honestly think many 5+ yoe folks are at E5 so want to give a shot for E6 given my yoe and roles & responsibility

Since I am a team lead at my current team and I plan the road map and help engineers to achieve it , I do a lot of partner teams collaborations and drive releases here.

I am in track to be switching to EM in a year or so as per my director

Is it even possible to try for E6 interviews at Meta ?
I am just making the switch only because of low pay at Microsoft.

Please share your thoughts

E5 at Meta, 8 YOE. I personally wouldn't want to come in as a 6. Think it would be a pretty big shock.

Thanks for the input. Could you please explain the shock you are referring to

Is that more than leading team , cross functional collaborations ?

Half of the E5s are team leads and plan roadmaps, lead XFN and deliver. For E6 it's a lot broader. You have find opportunities within the org and find projects spanning multiple teams and lead execution

I also want to know this, but from my understanding E6 would be a go to person for complex questions and experiencing running 30+ engineers. Coming in to a stack you don’t know but are expected to know at a deep level can be really hard

E6 leads projects that involve more than one team. L5 usually just one team, and executing on one particular area. Many teams will have multiple L5s actually.

L6 for areas that inculcate multiple teams (cross functional). If your project has more than 30 engineers, then that’s a L7, or someone that is about to get promoted to an L7.

Also numbers don’t map exactly between companies.
      Eg. A E6 at meta / google is a L5b at Uber.
And a L6 at Uber is more of a E6.5, L6.5 at Meta and Google.
And IC5 at Apple is an L6, but an IC6 is more of an L7.

But either way, should always interview at e6, worst case you'll be down leveled. Same with actually doing the job. Worst case you'll struggle initially but then grow fast and learn and you'll eventually get there. Bet on yourself :)

External hire at E6+ has the disadvantage of lacking knowledge to internal tech stacks as well as connections require to success in his/her role. As a result, there’s a supporting group to help external sr hire to get additional support that e5 and under don’t have.
