Im a Canadian Amazon swe intern. Lowkey unmotivated to leetcode for Cali or Seattle because I don’t want to move. Just seems like the responsible thing to do. My friends go to Meta, Atlassian, Stripe, etc and the TC is so high.

Would I be happy if I moved? Love friends & family. 😭

Just got my COPR email after two years. Peace of mind matters more than money to me and visa free travel but I think I too will be enslaved by hedonism once I transfer.

  • As a Canadian, I left Canada and never looked back. US is better in every way including healthcare (as long as you have good insurance). I don't work for a FAANG and I make $440k TC with 4 yoe in Seattle full remote. Taxes are much lower than they would be in Toronto or Vancouver.

If I may - how are you finding Seattle? Particularly weather, people, transit, etc?

    • I've spent about 3 years in NYC, 2 years in the Bay Area, and only recently relocated to the Seattle area.

I have a car, so I can't speak for transit beside the fact it's easier to drive around than Bay Area.

People are very friendly here. Have had more random conversations here in 2 weeks than in the 2 years I spent in the Bay Area. There aren't many homeless individuals on the Eastside near Bellevue.

Weather wise, it's sunnier than I expected. Unremarkable is how I'd describe it. People made it sound like there's no sun at all and it'd be overcast 24/7, so I was hyped for that since I'm like a vampire and don't like being in sunlight. Unfortunately, the sun is in fact visible for around half of the day.

Cost of living is slightly higher than Bay Area for groceries, especially fresh produce. Comparable to NYC in this respect.

Overall I like the Seattle area more than either of the other areas so far.

Does meta not hire Canadians? You might not be making Cali salary, but you can still do better locally
