What's it like? Are there publication opportunities? What is the team like? Compensation? Work life balance?

  • There’s a data science team that works with multiple groups across the business. I’ve only had limited interaction with them. My group works with sensitive internal data, so the work they do with us can’t be published at all. But I have no idea about what they do with other groups.

In general BBG is good about work life balance. Especially when you’re in more of a project based role. I’ve been here 3 years and while I have no illusions about there being issues here and there, I generally find it a good place to work. I will say you sometimes have to speak up for yourself to be noticed for good work by your manager (depending on the manager of course - some are great - just like anywhere you go). But it’s also a place where colleagues definitely remember good work you did for them and you can become a valuable asset quickly and get asked to join interesting new projects.

I was a little vague I️ know, but I hope that helps all the same.

If it's in Engineering, maybe. Don't go to Global Data, they will put you on a data team and laugh as you helplessly try to get access to the resources you need. Maybe not actually laugh, but in general Global Data manages its tech resources poorly, including data scientists. Very high turnover. Also compensation is not very good in Global Data but definitely competitive in Engineering.

Turnover rate is high among technologists in GD because GD recruits talent and then doesn't quite know what to do with it and certainly doesn't pay what it's worth. Some GD data scientists are expected to answer ADSKs (client help desk questions) and do other data analyst work. Some of them do genuinely interesting work with sentiment analysis, clustering, etc to move the product forward but it still comes down to compensation.
