If you are or have worked as a Forward Deployed Engineer at Palantir, how has it hurt or helped your career? I’m worried that I’ll be looked at as a Tech Consultant instead of a Software Engineer if I seek new opportunities in the future and that my technical abilities may be questioned.

Also, any regrets in deciding to work as a FDE? Do you feel like it was a good career choice?

They won't question your technical skills but umm...sweaty...Palantir is heckin' problematic.

One of their biggest customers is ICE who are LITERAL NAZIS and collaborated with Drumpf to break up undocumented familierinos.

They won't want to hire a Summer Child who can't do better.

The tech bar is very high. It’s not a traditional dev role but you also have more responsibility and ownership. It’s about applying yourself technically however it’s needed to accomplish the real life thing which I think prepares you broadly. A lot depends on what team you’re on, though you can move around.

  • You can always move to a dev role after a while if you show the desire and aptitude to do so

And what do the hours each week look like as a FDE vs Product Eng?
      Jan 28
    • It totally depends on the project and your eagerness. As an FDE, there are people who do 10h+ hour days and also spend time on weekends, and there are people who keep it under 40h/week if they are very efficient and not trying to impress with their eagerness. If you’re staffed on a pilot project, it normally means worse wlb, but better chance of comp increase when things go well.
Devs have great wlb — if you are good, you can easily finish your work in 30h/week, and then choose if you want to put in extra effort to advance faster
