Bloomberg verbal offer

Hi Blinders!

I just received a verbal offer for “Enterprise Data - Software Quality Assurance Engineer” at Bloomberg in Princeton, NJ. Initially, they offered TC = 95k but I negotiated the below:

TC = 125k
Base = 118k
Yearly bonus = 7k

Medical and dental insurance, as well as commuter benefits, included in the offer at no extra cost.

Currently, I work as a Developer Analyst at Barclays, Whippany Campus, NJ.

TC = 112k
Base = 110k
Yearly bonus = 2k

I am also interviewing at Amazon for a SDE1 position, and I have been invited to the virtual on-site this Friday. I much rather work as SDE than QA, my passion and excitement is inclined towards SDE, but maybe I can negotiate higher and take QA for now? Prepare for SDE while making more money at Bloomberg in the meantime?

Bloomberg is pushing me to give an answer by Friday.

What would you do? Please advice and help 😁

    • What’s the difference between that and accepting and then leaving on day one? What’s the difference between leaving on day one and day two? Nothing. Actually, reneging is better than both of those, the team can start looking for candidates sooner. So how long do you realistically have to stay at a company to make it “morally okay”? I would argue that you should leave as soon as you want to leave and have a better offer. If that happens before your first day of work, so be it.

    • It makes sense logically. It all comes down to what’s the earliest “morally acceptable” day to leave

  • I made up my mind. Even if I can negotiate slightly higher, I will turn QA down, keep grinding and then find the SWE/SDE position that actually excites me. Sometimes, we tend to forget we are not doing this for the money.

    Also, I have the on-site at Amazon coming up tomorrow so we’ll see.

    Thanks all!

  • In Bloomberg you can internally transfer to SWE fairly easily and your comp would change the next cycle once you do. But hey, join Amazon 😄

    • An interview with the team you want to switch to. When? Depends whenever you want, just find a team that’s interested and interview with them. Bloomberg is a company where you’re really free to do whatever you want if you’re ambitious enough

    • The asterisk here is the location. Most teams in the US are NY based so you will have much more options to consider if you don't mind relocating there.
