I am about to receive google offer (L4). But have 2 minds about it. In Qualcomm, my work has been appreciated and i don't have any issue with the TC also. The only thing is the work is not challenging. Qualcomm Pros: In Qualcomm i can see growth , apart from promotions probably down the line in few years i will be considered for Managerial role. Google Pros: Might get better work and TC. So the question : After how many years of experience, does Google give opportunity as a Manager? And what are the chances for that? Also if Google doesn't give the opportunity, is it possible to work for Google as an IC for long period of time(say 10-15 years)? Current YOE : 7 years Note: This is for H/W Engineer role.
Tc?
Yeah exactly! TC or GTFO! Keep the Blind tradition. Looks like the Google offer ain’t that attractive as the OP has mentioned almost the same TC. I know for a fact Qualcomm does not pay high TC regardless of how far up the band you’re.
That's not true headbanger. The OP is probably a high performing (Qualcomm) Senior Staff Engineer in a highly sought after group (that does pay well), which means that s/he is likely earning around 180K base, 20% cash bonus, and 100K to 120K RSUs (per year), giving a TC of around 320K. If that's in San Diego, that's competitive.
come on OP, you're better than this. It's impossible to answer this question without knowing TC.
please share TC and level
TC OR GTFO
Otherwise, let's talk religion.
Have you seen AOC recently?
TC man !!!
Google L4 for 7 years seems low ball. You should ask for L6. Qualcomm work culture is not good. If you already love Qualcomm culture then Google will be smooth ride for you. Ask L6 in Google and move there.
There is literally 0% chance of L6 with 7 yoe. 4 is right but could stretch for 5.
This is a great question. IMHO, Google HW team will be smaller than Qualcomms ..so I would assume more growth opportunities.
Being a manager at Google is a choice one make. No one would be 'considered' for manager role after X years of service. I've seen L8 work as IC. It's rare, but possible to stay IC forever if you choose to
Thanks for the answer. So what's the general criteria for considered as Manger in Google?
You need to be L5+ (some orgs only do L6+) and interview
