So I was offered a job. It’s a big company and I think I was chosen because I have brown skin. I don’t believe affirmative action at all and I am definitely qualified for the position. I was in a call 10 minutes before it started and overheard a conversation in the background. It basically went as follows - she’s a woman, handicap, 40, and minority... I’m pretty grossed out as it’s what I have spent my whole career trying not to be a “token”. Do I say something, take it, or stay where I am? It’s not like I’m hurting and my current position is awesome.
This didn't happen
Sorry about that. Must be terrible feeling.
Been there. Just outperform and shut them up.
Say something or not, I wouldn't take it. If ppl in the team have that as the slightest of reasoning for offering you the job, it means you may not get the best tasks. They'll consider you a diversity hire and you won't have the same level of respect. Someone with exactly your skills and qualifications might still be seen as more competent than you.
They will not respect you. I will not go
I will not join as I'll always be the minority hire.
if you’re qualified , take it. nothing wrong with them also checking some other boxes
What’s current TC and offered TC?
250k and 265k.
TC offered and your current TC matter here, this isn’t like the movies we’re if you reject something on principle something better will happen “the universe will do right by you” is a fairy tale.
Who cares, take it and do well to shut them up.
I don't see why she needs to fight to prove, especially considering she's happy with her current job. She may not be given the best of tasks to prove her worth whereas a slightest of mistake would be attributed to her being a sympathy/diversity hire.
