Hi Qualtrics folks, I'm seriously considering an offer for a senior software engineer position from Qualtrics in Seattle. The work sounds very exciting and in line with what I'm looking for. However a host of negative reviews on Glassdoor are giving me a bit of a pause. I was reading about things like serious talent attrition and engineering not having any say in setting project schedules amongst other things. I wanted to get a pulse on what your opinions are of the work life there as an engineer and if there's any truth to the negative reviews. Thanks!
My 2 cents from a non-eng / non-Seattle employee... I was curious and dug into some of the most recent negative reviews of the company. Most seemed to be sales-oriented but I did find one Eng response where the cons were: 1. Being a sales-driven company. Not going to lie... sales pays my salary. I don't think there's anything wrong with being sales-driven because ultimately our Product is what drives sales. 2. Employee compensation is low. Within each level there are bands. You're ability to negotiate your compensation may or may not play a factor into this. 3. Cross team communication and internal document is poor. I tend to agree with this one. One thing that has helped is the frequent travel of resources between HQ and the Seattle office and vice versa. Documentation can definitely be improved. 4. Management doesn't value your opinion. I've found this to be the opposite. Coming from a large company where I felt like a hamster on a wheel at Qualtrics I've had a direct impact on the direction of things. 5. RSUs are negligible. I don't think the RSUs can compare with the Google / Facebook offering but can't confirm here. Also, it's hard to put a value on the RSUs.
I can 2nd all 5 of these comments.
Negative posts on Glassdoor are sales reps who don't hit quota or the junior engineer who had a shitty ops load. I love this place. John and the leadership team are awesome. Lots of autonomy and impact. Great people. Good pay! Company is in a strong trajectory financially (50-60% growth yoy) and an IPO is close. You'll love it here. What team would you join?

I've never found the negative Glassdoor reviews to be representative of engineering as a whole. Granted, I'm a Utah engineer so I can't speak to the Seattle office, but the bad reviews tend to be one off rants. Overall, the culture is pretty solid. If you're happy with the compensation and role, I don't see what would stop you from accepting.
There's a lot of politics at all engineering levels in Seattle.
There are politics where ever you go. Qualtrics is one of the least political places I have worked.
More good politics (people fighting for the right things) than bad politics (putting themselves first at the expense of others).
Even on cool teams.
Qualtrics for me has been a much better place to work for than previous startups and large companies I worked for. The culture is great, very transperant, customer driven and you get full autonomity if you deliver results. If you want to grow and make the best out of your experience, join us.
Thanks for the detailed comments folks!
Lots of positivity in this thread from Qualtrics folks. As a Seattle engineer, I just want to chime in and say there are certainly senior engineers leaving Qualtrics Seattle for some of the reasons mentioned on Glassdoor (sales driven, insane timelines, etc) however those cases seem to be isolated and team dependent. Ask lots of questions to the hiring manager and make sure they give you in depth details on what the team works on and whether you'll be grinding or innovating.
I meant 4-5. but 5 is senior. 4.5 is upper mid level (isn't that like 62 at Microsoft?). recruiters will tell you anything to get you to sign. WL balance depends on your team, manager, and how focused you are at work. for most teams, if you skip all the non essential meetings and hide in a corner so nobody can distract you, WL balance is good.
"Recruiters will tell you anything to get you to sign".... You really think that low of our recruiting team? My experience was great. I worked with Jenny, Spaulding and Dave in the process.
