I’m curious what Google employees are being told about the future of WFH or WFA. Considering a role but if I need to be tied to an office (by the way what are people hearing about the Google Village being built in downtown SJ? Can anyone work from there?) then it would change my near term plans to buy a home somewhere in the Bay Area. TC $430k

There is an official process for requesting to work permanently from another office or to go fully remote once you join the team. It’s potentially a good thing to ask about during team matching - ask questions like whether people on their team have changed location or gone fully remote, to get a sense of whether the manager is supportive.
Being brand new does make it less likely that you’ll get approved for full remote, especially if you’re L3, but I expect there will still be plenty of time before we RTO anyway.
Basically my recommendation is to join first and then apply for remote when you are established on the team, as long as you’re ok with the (relatively low in my opinion) risk of RTO happening in the meantime.
That said, only about 10% have chosen remote.
